2019 Meadow View Read-A-Thon
We are excited to launch the fourth annual Read-A-Thon as our secondary fundraising event for the 2018-19 school year!
The Read-A-Thon will highlight literacy as we work to try to raise $5,000 to help support the school’s Reading Resource Room. The Reading Resource Room provides all classrooms with books to support literacy throughout the school year. Over time, these books can get lost or damaged, and there is always a desire for the latest children's literature to keep the content fresh and interesting for our students.
The Read-A-Thon will take place over a two-week period (Feb. 19 to March 1) and consist of nine reading sessions during the school day (NOTE there is no school on Monday, Feb. 18, which is why the event starts on Tuesday and is one day shorter than previous years). The reading sessions will take place during the classrooms’ regular literacy periods. Students are encouraged to log additional reading time at home.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
Students will raise money by finding sponsors - people like friends and family who care about their education - who will donate in support of the students' reading efforts. Each student will have his/her own individual fundraising page and online reading log. A flyer customized for each student will go home in the Friday Folders on Feb. 8, with instructions on how to set up the fundraising pages. Just by creating this fundraising page, the students will win a prize!
Students will read (sessions are reading-level appropriate) books of their own choosing and record their reading into an online system. Reading sessions will take place every day at school during this two-week period, and students are also encouraged to log additional reading time at home.
All donations will be made to the students' individual fundraising pages via credit card. Students can earn RAT Bucks which can be redeemed directly through the online system in a prize store every time someone donates to their page. All prizes must be ordered by the March 13th deadline, and Read-A-Thon.com will ship all prizes to the school for distribution.
As our school continues to have fundraising needs, the PTO chose a program to support that need and one that benefits our kids academically rather than asking them to sell.
The PTO is planning some fun activities during the Read-A-Thon to keep the momentum going and encourage participation:
The Read-A-Thon will kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in each classroom with an all-school reading session first thing in the morning, and everyone is encouraged to come to school dressed as their favorite literary character.
The Read-A-Thon will end on Friday, March 1, which coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Everyone is encouraged to come to school that day dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.
Staff can get involved by participating in Staff Picks, where they can share their favorite elementary school appropriate book/author prior to the Read-A-Thon kick off.
Students can participate in the Staff Picks contest, where they can get some new ideas for their reading lists and have a chance to win a prize. Each afternoon, one of the Staff Picks will be revealed during the afternoon announcements. We will also post them daily on the PTO website and on the PTO Facebook page. Students can track the Staff Picks and drop off completed forms to the front office by the end of the day, Monday, March 4. All completed and correct forms will be entered in a drawing to win a gift certificate to the Douglas County Library’s Second Chapter Bookstore.
Parents can get involved by participating in our Parent Read-A-Thon and reading along with your students at home. Download a registration form here. The parent who reads the most minutes wins a $25 Amazon gift card!
